Definition of CRAFT (Merriam-Webster.com. 2012. http://www.merriam-webster.com (27 Feb 2012).

	1. skill in planning, making, or executing : dexterity
2. an occupation or trade requiring manual dexterity or artistic skill <the carpenter's craft> <the craft of writing plays> <crafts such as pottery, carpentry, and sewing>

According to Merriam-Webster the definition of craft includes the words; planning, executing, and artistic skill. These rules apply for successful communication.

Boring press releases and announcements fail when attempting to secure exposure for a business or destination. It’s about crafting and targeting the message in way that encompasses traditional and emerging media. It’s about connecting your brand with the people who care about it.

A few rules of craft communications -

Blasting - Don’t do it! Sending a release or pitch to everyone from a contact list will get you nowhere except the delete button and possibly a block list. Make sure you understand what the writer is covering and that your message is a fit by tailoring it to them with personal outreach. They are NOT just a name on a list.

Corporate-speak & Jargon - If you use the phrase “outside the box” or “dynamic experience” you should try talking like that for a day and see how people react. Most rational people will immediately tune you out.

Long Headlines - Equate this to the speech you hear every time you board a plane. Yes, there are some important parts to it, but do you really need to know how to put on a seatbelt? No, so you tune it out. That’s exactly what writers will do if your headline is long and painful. Rule of thumb, if you can’t tweet it don’t write it.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization. Outreach should be optimized for display in Google Search and headlines should be short for display in Google News. Use keywords not buzzwords and jargon.

Launching a new business is a scary thing. One minute you’ll have a load of confidence, and the next you’ll think “what the hell was I thinking?” No matter how large or how small a new business, it simply doesn't happen without support.
